WHAT: Chalk Art in the Park.

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Goodyear Community Park, 3151 N. Litchfield Road

The Chalk Art in the Park event, scheduled to take place Saturday, will bring together professional and less-than-professional artists for a family day of drawing.

The event, which is sponsored by Goodyear and the Agua Fria Community Artists, will feature 22 professional artists, face painting, a grilled cheese food truck and music from DJ Joseph Mercado.

Unlike many chalk art festivals around the country where the community is merely an on-looker, here, community members are encouraged to join in on the fun and make their own works.

Anthony Galto, executive director for AFCA and member of the Goodyear Arts and Culture Commission, said he encourages the community to go out and talk to the artists and work alongside them.

We’re really community focused. So It’s not just bringing, you know, professional artists out there … we want that interaction between the community and artists,” he said.

Galto also said he has worked with the musical DJ for a while now, and that Mercado creates a great atmosphere for art.

His music style just creates a cool vibe for everyone to kind of chill and do some artwork,” Galto said.

Mercado describes his style of music as an “electronic bass” with a mix of “old-school sound.”

I’m planning to play music that will inspire the artists to draw,” he said. “When the beats connect with the artists, it flows together to create some good drawings and good atmosphere.”

Hugo Medina is a professional mural and portrait artist who was one of 14 participants at the first event in March.

Last year, Medina collaborated with his two daughters to create a piece of art on the sidewalk. This year, he plans to do the same, he said.

It’s just a lot of fun to come out with my family, do artwork and spend a beautiful afternoon in the park,” he said.

The event will take place from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. at Goodyear Community Park, 3151 N. Litchfield Road. Chalk is provided for the community at no expense, and face painting is also free.
