A park ranger will take participants on a guided hike to learn about desert plants that have been used for food and medicine throughout history. The hike begins at 8 a.m. along the Black Rock Short Loop Trail at White Tank Regional Mountain Park in Waddell. The trail is less than a mile long and is barrier-free. Cars’ screening

Avondale's Out and About event will show "Cars" from 6 to 9 p.m. in the in-field at Phoenix International Raceway, 7602 S. Avondale Blvd., Avondale. There will also be classic cars on display for a car show. Movie-goers will have a chance to pose in front of "Victory Lane" with the official PIR pace car. The event is free. Take a folding chair to sit on. The concession stand will be selling hot dogs, hamburgers and snacks. There will be pre-show entertainment.

Christian singles group

A Christian singles group affiliated with Summit Community Church meets from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Verrado Center, 4239 N. Village St., Buckeye. Search for scorpions at 7 p.m. along the Black Rock Trail at the White Tank Regional Mountain Park in Waddell. Bring your own scorpion light or purchase one at the entrance station of the park. White Tank Mountain Regional Park in Waddell will show a snake feeding at 3 p.m. Participants will learn about the habits of some of the creatures of the desert by going to the Nature Center during feeding time. M.A.S.H. Food Distribution

Turning Leaf Community and West Valley Family Church host a M.A.S.H, or Miracles Are Still Happening, food distribution from 7 to 11 a.m. the fourth Saturday of each month at West Valley Family Church, 6115 N. 91st Ave., Glendale. Seventy to 80 pounds of food will be available for a donation of $5. The event runs on a first-come, first-served basis.

Prescription drug drop off

The Avondale Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration is offering people the opportunity to drop off expired or unwanted prescription drugs for proper disposal from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Walgreens, 10710 W. McDowell Road, Avondale. No glass containers will be accepted. Liquid medication must be in original containers. Inhalers, syringes or other items used to inject medication will not be accepted.
