Jordan Arbo graduates from Minnesota State

Jordan E. Arbo of Goodyear has graduated with a bachelor’s degree in interdisciplinary studies from Minnesota State University in Mankato, Minn.

 

Storm water pollution posters wanted

Pupils in third through sixth grades have the opportunity to enter Maricopa County’s storm water pollution poster contest, “Be a Stormwater Pollution Hero.”

Youths can help inform the public about the leading cause of water pollution in the United States by creating an artistic poster with a message.

The pupil’s name, grade, teacher’s name, school name, address and phone number must be printed on the back of the poster.

Entries are divided into two categories: third and fourth grade and fifth and sixth grade. Prizes will be awarded for first-, second- and third-place winners in each category.

Submissions must be sent by March 24, 2017, to the Maricopa County Environmental Services Department, Stormwater Quality Program “Poster Contest,” 1001 N. Central Ave., Suite 301, Phoenix, AZ 85004.

Brenda Vasquez graduates from Upper Iowa University

Brenda Vasquez of Avondale graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in nursing in October from Upper Iowa University.

Cum laude is awarded to those with a 3.5-3.7 GPA.

 

APS donates books to Avondale pupils

Arizona Public Service Co. volunteers donated nearly 100 books and inspirational notes to pupils at Avondale Middle School and Eliseo C. Felix School, both in Avondale, during the pupils’ Read Better Be Better graduation.

The Read Better Be Better after-school literacy program pairs trained eighth-graders with struggling third-grade readers. Together, they work through the curriculum, followed by group activities; all of which are designed to develop literacy skills as a foundation for broader academic success.

APS donated 26 third-grade books and 73 eighth-grade books.

 

Caroline Niceschwander makes dean’s list

Caroline Niceschwander of Goodyear has been named to Eastern New Mexico University’s dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must complete a minimum of 15 credit hours with a GPA between 3.25 and 4.0.

 

Winners announced in young artist program

Goodyear has announced the winners of the fourth annual Mayor’s Select Art Awards for fall 2016. Chosen from 66 entries by a panel of judges, 17 pupils will share $1,600 in scholarships to further their education.

In the junior division, Westar Elementary seventh-grader Jenna Tovar won first place; Westar eighth-grader Abigail Fernihough won second place; Trivium Preparatory seventh-grader Jaden Lopez won third place; and Westar sixth-grader Kristen Nicodemus and Trivium seventh-grader Lara Hahne won honorable mentions.

In the senior division, Estrella High School senior Michaela Daniels won Best in Show; Desert Edge High School senior Kaitlyn Saucede won first place in 3D artwork; Estrella High sophomore Montana Downing and Desert Edge senior Angelica Molina won honorable mentions in 3D artwork; Desert Edge junior Brianna Broadbent won first place in drawing; Desert Edge juniors Abagaile Davis and Kaimana Cozo won honorable mentions in drawing; Estrella High senior Kendall Clark won first place in painting; Desert Edge senior Katelyn Canchola, Desert Edge sophomore Kiera Mitchell and Trivium senior Kaylee Christian won honorable mentions in painting; and Estrella High senior Emily McHerron won first place in photography.
 

Cierra Lee named to McPherson honor roll

Cierra Lee of Goodyear was named to the honor roll for the fall semester at McPherson College in McPherson, Kan.

Honor roll is awarded to students with a 3.55 GPA or higher.

 

Goodyear residents graduate from Park University

Juanita A. Turner of Goodyear graduated summa cum laude in December with a bachelor’s degree in management and human resources from Park University.

Summa cum laude is awarded to those with a 3.9 to 4.9 GPA.

Melvin M. Turner of Goodyear graduated cum laude in December with a bachelor’s degree in management and human resources from Park University.

Cum laude is awarded to those with a 3.5 to 3.7 GPA.

 

Emilie Etchart makes dean’s list

Emilie Etchart of Litchfield Park was named to Belmont University’s dean’s list for the fall 2016 semester.

To be eligible for the dean’s list, a student must complete a minimum of 12 credit hours with an average GPA of 3.5 and no grade below a C.

 

Avondale holding contest for water conservation

Avondale is holding a contest for young artists to submit their poster designs for the city’s Water Conservation Poster Calendar. The contest is open to all Avondale public, private and home-schooled pupils in grades first through 12th.

The poster contest asks youths to illustrate one important point about conserving water, water quality or recycling. Judging will be based on the message conveyed, neatness, creativity, originality and visual effectiveness.

Every participant will receive a certificate of participation. Thirteen winning entries will be chosen and featured in the annual Avondale Water Conservation Poster Calendar and could be used in other promotions throughout the year.

Entries must be submitted by Jan. 31 to the City of Avondale Water Conservation Office, 399 E. Lower Buckeye Road, Suite 100, Avondale, AZ 85323. For information, visit avondale.org/CalendarPosterContest.
