Local First Arizona to celebrate Indie Week

by Erica Pederson

Local First Arizona communications coordinator

The Fourth of July is meant to be a day of celebration, where we all take a moment to remember our ancestors who declared America’s independence. While we give thanks for this country and the freedoms we have today during this special holiday, we should also recognize another important foundation of this country: our local and independent businesses.

VA facility should be kept open, expanded

by Hank Pasinski
VFW Post 12098 senior vice commander

My name is Hank Pasinski and I am enrolled in the Veterans Affairs Healthcare Program. I am also the senior vice commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 12098. Our post has more than 160 members and fewer than 30 currently use the Buckeye VA facility.  Primarily because the specific services they need are not available in Buckeye.

The Buckeye facility should not be closed but expanded into a full-service facility. That would reduce patient load in both Surprise and Phoenix as veterans who live in communities near Buckeye would probably use the Buckeye facility as opposed to traveling to Surprise or downtown Phoenix. That would reduce appointment time at all three facilities and better serve veterans, which is the mission statement of the VA.

Some other salient points for you to consider:

Mental health as important as physical health

Every year leading up to Father’s Day is Men’s Health Week and it’s a great time to remind men of the importance of their health.

Remember, as the conversation about men’s health begins, it doesn’t end with just physical health related to heart health, screening for colon cancer, prostate exams, nutrition, smoking cessation and exercise. Behavioral health also needs addressing.

One in four men is affected by some type of mental illness in their lifetime. In their 30s and 40s, men are at greater risk for disorders such as major depression, anxiety disorders and bipolar disorder.

The integration of behavioral health care and physical health care is well under way in central Arizona. Magellan Health Services is on the cutting edge of integrating behavioral and physical health care and operates six clinics with fully integrated physical and behavioral health care.
