Vote yes on Prop. 205 and take a bite out of crime

Arizonans have a chance to take a bite out of crime Nov. 8 by voting yes on Proposition 205.

Proposition 205 is the ballot initiative calling for legalization of recreational marijuana.

How would legalizing marijuana take a bite out of crime, you ask? Well, for starters, ending marijuana prohibition would bring the black market to its knees.

Not to get all scientific, but let’s get all scientific

Avondale’s decision to use a new method for its annual Citizen Satisfaction Survey had us confused until we reached out to the city and asked what was up with that?

For the past few years, Avondale has conducted its own survey, allowing all residents of the city to take part, whereas its sister city, Goodyear, has used a service that mails the city’s survey to a random sampling. Until now, we thought Avondale’s method was more fair, more inclusive than Goodyear’s, since everyone was invited to take part.

Don’t let fear interfere with your life span

I have a mammogram scheduled for Thursday and I’m scared to death.

I’m not afraid of the pain, I’ve had mammograms before, I know just how unpleasant they are.

I’m afraid of what the screening might find.

Why we aren’t endorsing Donald Trump

The West Valley View has been doing political endorsements for nearly its entire 30-year lifetime.

The newspaper has endorsed in city elections each cycle and from time to time in county, state and even federal races.

Stop, STOPP!

Stop already, STOPP.

You’re starting to make yourself look ridiculous. And petty.

STOPP, or Save Tonopah Oppose Poultry Plant, recently delivered a petition to the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors demanding Clint Hickman, chairman of the board who represents District 4, of which Tonopah is a part of, recuse himself from any and all air quality issues countywide.

Mayoral debate is right thing to do for voters

We hope Stephanie Karlin will take Kenn Weise up on his request for a debate. Avondale residents are paying enough for a special election, they deserve to hear what separates their two mayoral candidates.

The city’s current mayor and vice mayor were the top two vote-getters in a three-way competition for the City Council’s top seat in the August primary, edging out Frank Scott, a former councilman and vice mayor.

Biden wouldn’t call Americans deplorable

Rumor has it Joe Biden is being prepped to step in should Hillary’s health falter further rendering her incapable of completing her campaign for the country’s highest office. I would have thought her vice presidential pick would have been the one to be tapped for the position, but I guess Biden makes more sense seeing as how no one has heard of Tim Kaine.

Who is this man with a badge?

I first met Joe Arpaio when he ran for sheriff the first time. He came in for an endorsement interview with our editor and me.

We endorsed in local, county, state and congressional elections in the early years.

Not much stood out about Arpaio at the time. He had a background in law enforcement and the county needed a new sheriff after the problems the current one had finding the killers in the Buddhist temple murders.

The jobs aren’t coming back

The jobs aren’t coming back

There is a myth that it is possible to bring back the jobs from overseas. And the likelihood of that happening is about as likely as purchasing the winning lottery ticket while being hit by lightning.

Home Rule failure would cripple West Valley cities

Avondale and Tolleson voters have one question on their ballots that is more important than any office they’ll be voting for.

It’s the question of whether or not to approve the Home Rule Option.

Passage of the Home Rule Option, or the Alternative Local Expenditure Limitation, is crucial if residents wish to keep the services they’ve become accustomed to — police and fire protection, trash collection, clean water, things like that.
