Lady Knights run-rule Lady Tigers on back of Devan Dickson's shutout and 3 HR's

Westview’s and Millennium’s softball teams have both distanced themselves as the top two teams in the 6A Southwest Region, with each team entering the April 13 matchup undefeated in league play.

The Lady Knights took a step toward claiming the title in a big way, run-ruling the Lady Tigers 11-0 in five innings on the back of an otherworldly performance by Devan Dickson.

Verrado had a two-day slip up in power-points games, but aside from that, the Lady Vipers have been unstoppable.

Verrado's latest triumph was a 9-2 victory April 7 over Phoenix Barry Goldwater, a 5A Desert West Region foe. The victory earned the Lady Vipers a sweep and kept them undefeated in the region, tied with Desert Edge for the top spot.

Wolves’ 2 losses come in extra innings

Estrella Foothills could have easily been unbeaten in the Wolves Classic, its home tournament played at the Goodyear Ballpark training fields, last week, but a pair of extra-inning losses were its demise.

The Wolves scored 51 combined runs in five games, but lost 9-7 in eight innings to Phoenix Northwest Christian April 7, and 11-10 to Cottonwood Mingus April 8.

Westview baseball threw its hat back into the ring for the region title chase with three straight victories over 6A Southwest foes April 4-7.

The Knights swept district rival La Joya, winning 10-7 April 4 and 4-2 April 6, and scored four runs in the seventh inning to walk-off Surprise Valley Vista, 5-4. Westview moved to 3-2 in region play, one game behind Valley Vista and two behind Millennium.

Millennium scores 7 straight to sink Tolleson

Millennium softball overcame a six-run deficit to beat Tolleson, 7-6, April 7 and remain undefeated in 6A Southwest Region play.

The Lady Tigers (11-12, 5-0) kept pace with Westview for the top spot in the region with the victory, and improved to 10-2 in power-points games. Millennium is currently No. 12 in the 6A rankings, comfortably inside the top-24 playoff spots.

Millennium baseball sits in playoff pole position with few games remaining

Millennium scored one run in the top of the first inning in its baseball contest at Tolleson April 7, an RBI single by sophomore David Enriquez.

That one run proved enough for a 1-0 Tigers win over the Wolverines, and moved them alone atop the 6A Southwest Region standings with two weeks remaining in the regular season.

Estrella has winning record after first 9 matches

Estrella Foothills girls tennis struggled last year coming off a state championship in 2015. The Lady Wolves’ top player and individual state champ, Zoey Nelson, didn’t participate, and the team moved up from Division III to Division II. The combination left Estrella winless in new coach Garrett Maier’s first season at the helm.

Buckeye 9th in D-II rankings

Buckeye girls tennis has a new coach, but it hasn't stopped the Lady Hawks from their usual success.

Buckeye entered the week 8-2 and ranked ninth in the Division II power-points. New coach Alan Reyes said the key to their success has been experience and leadership. Five of the top six players on Buckeye's roster are seniors.

Vipers’ strong pitching has it atop 5A

Verrado's 9 power-points victories leading way in conference

Sometimes losing can be an integral part in setting a team off in the right direction. That’s what happened with Verrado’s baseball team.

The Vipers dropped the semifinal contest of the Wayne Des Combes Westside Invitational Feb. 25 but didn’t lose another game for more than a month. The 12-game winning streak included nine consecutive power-points victories, which has Verrado at the top of the 5A rankings.
