A well-regulated militia needed now

The second amendment to the U.S. Constitution:

A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

We don't know what the solution is, but there has to be a solution to stop crazies from killing normal people.

The first time or two it happened we thought it was just a fluke. But it keeps happening over and over again.

Citizens shouldn't constantly fear for their lives when in public places.

But we haven't come up with what should be done.

There have been people calling for stricter gun laws. If we could find a way to test people to be sure they are sane-thinking human beings before we allowed them to buy guns, we would agree with that solution.

Others have suggested we shouldn't allow guns in certain places. Schools are the types of places that have been suggested and legislated to be gun-free zones. But with the latest shooting in Connecticut, it is apparent that gun-free zones are only for the law abiding and sane people of the world.

An alternative to gun-free zones was a law proposed in Arizona, which would have specifically allowed guns on school campuses. That law did not pass.

But given that there is no way to keep guns from the crazies and no way to keep the crazies out of public places, maybe allowing normal people to carry weapons is a better alternative.

After the shootings in the movie theater in Colorado, it was suggested that if patrons of the theater had been carrying guns, maybe the shooter would have been deterred by the prospect of a firefight with the potential victims returning fire and not attempted his murderous rampage. But even if he did, there would have been the potential for patrons to have prevented some of the murders by successfully returning fire.

Until recently, the type of military force needed to secure "a free state" was substantially more than an armed populace. Modern warfare in the last century was more based on missiles, bombs and artillery than on men armed with rifles or pistols. But the more things change, the more things come back around to the way they once were.

Conflict today is more often played out in the streets by men with guns. It's like that in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. So the Second Amendment's well-regulated militia is again an appropriate force to protect the people.

Maybe adults should be required to carry weapons.

Or maybe the nation needs a well-regulated militia, one like the Guardian Angels that became famous for patrolling New York City's subways. That organization still exists and is working to protect such communities as the ones in New York and New Jersey that were affected by Hurricane Sandy. Maybe it's time for a larger effort to provide volunteer militia members at every school and place where large numbers of people congregate.

In addition, as much as we hate them, we think that metal detectors should become a part of our daily lives. They're already in airports, courthouses and stadiums. They're needed in places where large groups of people congregate, malls, theaters, maybe even schools.

The country has reached a point where something different needs to be done. We think it couldn't happen here but we're sure the parents in Newtown, Conn., thought that as well.
